Colored Mason jar bands

Post  madnicmom on 6/10/2012, 2:38 pm

Here is the latest article from http://www.motherearthnews.com/canning.aspx and they show colored bands. Do any of you know how/where to obtain these cute things? I think colored bands where be cool to color code our food.

I read over the article, sort of, and didn't find mention of the colored lids/bands. Did anyone find them?

I bought some to make strawberry jam a couple yrs ago that were white, with strawberries on the lid. I put the jam up using the water bath method. The lids were fine, but the bands, well, were painted, and the paint came off during the cooking. If you find them, I'd ask about whether they can be cooked with, before you buy.

I wonder if there's a way to Rit dye (or some other dye) the bands and put them on after processing. Maybe spray painting the bands after processing? But then, not sure if those dyed/painted bands could be used for future processing.

You could always put a colored rubber band around the lid or jar. But I would like to know where these are available too.

Take a look at this site: http://www.ehow.com/how_6944152_paint-canning-jar-lid.html

Although I suspect it's not the best idea, perhaps they were painted to liven up the photograph. The picture could also be Photoshopped" to make the lids stand out.

Well, this would be a guaranteed money-making product then wouldn't it? Wish I had the cash flow to bank roll it! I loved the colorful rings in the article. I get Mother Earth News and Countryside every month. Everybody reads them cover to cover. Don't always agree with their politics but can't beat them for information.

As I understand canning processing (I'm not a canner), you put the rings on the jars a little loose until the processing is completed and the lids seal. Then the rings can be tightened down or removed for storage. Why not have a set of plain rings reserved for processing and then replace those rings with decorator rings for storage or gifting?

Kay, just hand tighten before water bath canning, rings removed during storage, and used when food is opened, such as jelly. Don't know about the rings and pressure canning?

Good idea to have a set painted for gifting, I will only gift to folks that are NOT RELATIVES(Another thread/another day)

Need to see if a paint is made that can be boiled/steamed!
