First summer growing

Post  arla on 6/13/2012, 10:40 am

Really just a single 4x4 SFG, although with a Spaghetti squash plant growing approx 4 ft from it.

Oddly the spaghetti squash is doing really well, compared to the regular squash that's in the SFG, but it was planted a little earlier so.

In this one you can see the first start of a female flower on the spaghetti squash (thought it would never come)

Here is the squash growing up the trellis

The SFG in it's glory, from left to right, Chard, Beets and two squares of lettuce, in the second row it's more lettuce, chard and beets

Here is the side view, can see the first two rows mentioned above, and radish's growing next to the squash almost ready to pickup

And here is a back view, can see the garden beans growing up and just about reaching the trellis, the squash is interesting because it's not really growing out, it's just sort of growing in a small patch so far, we'll see

It's my first SFG, so I've made a lot of mistakes, and ended up with three squares without much in right now (I tried to put in lettuce, but it got baked in the sun)

For laughs, here is the potato that apparently I didn't find when this used to be a regular garden, so it's growing up from under the SFG

Not sure how I can get at the potatoes that must have grown, maybe this autumn/winter I'll have a go.

Your garden looks great
Summer squash does not tend to vine, it just stays in one place.
Is that zucchini?
congrats on your first SFG

It is zucchini, found some seeds I'd had since 08, so planted a bunch of them and got a plant out of it (which for zucchini in my experience is all we really need).

Curious about the vining, since zucchini (for me at least) every other year has been more of a vine vs a stationary small plant, one reason I put it under the trellis so it had room to grow (although maybe the spaghetti squash will do all of that for me).

perhaps it is a different type, I have never found zucchini to vine, in fact this year I am going to try to grow them up a stake, but watched a video on how to do it, because they do not as a rule climb on their own.

Many of the other squashes vine though. Zucchinis do have a large stalk that can be trained to go in a certain direction though. (again, of the ones that I have grown) Smile
