Mystery holes in my soil

First year doing SFG. Planted seeds and starter plants last weekend. Noticed a fair number of well defined holes in the soil, but no evidence of what made them. They are too big for ants, and no sign of worms or other grubs. No evidence of anything bothering the tomato and pepper starter plants.

Our only theory is that Robins (which are prolific in our area) are pulling out earth worms.

I set two of my 2x4 boxes near our back door so I could watch tomatoes and lettuce grow. Yesterday I saw a huge blue jay go from square to square picking out worms. You may be right about your robins.

Robins have been doing a number on my boxes as well. At least you know you have a healthy worm population!
