Greetings from SW Oregon

Post  oxman on 6/16/2012, 3:11 pm

Hi,
My name is Stan. I live in SW Oregon and have been intensively gardening for 35 years. My wife and I live on a ranch and raise angora goats. We have gardened in Colorado, Montana and here in Oregon. We avoid pesticides and GMO products. Our management practices are always evolving (especially due to the aging process Very Happy Shocked ). We have bees, dogs, cats, sheep and goats as part of our family. We have a vegetable garden, two small orchards and two small vineyards.
We have had oxen for traction and love making wine.
Our web site has a lot of this stuff documented (almost 500 megs hosted at our ISP server)

We use linux and open source software for cyber space.
Hoping to learn much here.
Thanks.

WELCOME to SFG welcome
Sounds like an interesting garden you have. What type of grapes do you make wine with? I have just started a few shiraz plants last summer, but have high hopes bottoms up

Well we started with a few varieties. Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sav, Aurora, Swensons Red and Chardonay of the French Hybrid types. They do OK but have been hammered pretty heavy by the deer the last few years. (I just installed an 8' wire mesh fence around that old vineyard, my garden and the new vineyard this winter. It should help.) We also planted several native american varieties in the old vineyard-concord, niagra and a red concord. By far they do the best.

In the new vineyard I planted mainly (25 vines out of 40) a short season american/french cross, the winter hardy Leon Millot. It makes a great red wine and seems vigorous. But also in the new vineyard I have concord, swenson red, dilemma, espirit, prairie star and several vines from old homesteads in the area. Not sure what they are.

As you can see I lean toward the north american varieties. A lot of experimentation going on with this. We usually get one late and one early frost. The new vineyard is only two years old so it is not quite established.

I tried posting a link to our site but newbies must wait a week I think. Otherwise google singingfalls and you will be over loaded with images. Very Happy I have 350 megs hosted with my ISP.

Thank you for the welcome!

Hi Oxman! Welcome to the forum. If you think about it, pop on over to the PNW part of the forum to say hello every now and then (from the home page, scroll down to the Regional Forums). We usually keep a running thread going each month where we kind of keep tabs on each other with what's being planted or how things are growing or what we're harvesting now. You've got some much going on, I bet we all could learn from you. Thanks for saying hi.
