Did I luck out? Is this a compost bin?

Post  Coelli on 6/16/2012, 5:07 pm

This was in the side yard when we moved in. Is this a compost bin? It opens on the top and front, and the back is mesh!

Here's the inside:

I can't imagine any other reason for the top-entry or mesh back. It seems impractical for storage.

If it's a compost bin... I assume you just throw everything in through the top and then access the compost through the front?

I'm a total noob but I'm hoping my hunch is right!

Compost bin

Sorry, but it looks to me like a place to hide garbage cans or recyclable containers.

a compost bin can be whatever you want it to be.
It can be a large pile in the yard or a bucket.

Unless you have a burning need to hide your garbage cans, .... it IS a compost bin Very Happy

Maybe you can make it into a compost bin by cutting holes in the sides or pulling off some of the boards and putting in narrower boards or some sort of mesh wire to hold the compost material in. The holes or slats or mesh wire would be to allow air into the pile. You could divide it up into sections where the first space is the beginning, the second is when you need to turn, then the last would be the final composting area for your compost to finish. I think that is the way it works.

I am so totally not very experienced in composting so someone else can give more advice. You can do a search on composting on this site also.
