What plants need to be started indoors

Post  fulfam on 4/11/2010, 8:59 am

This is my first time planting and I was wondering if there are certain plants that need to be started indoors and transplanted rather than planting the seeds directly into the square-foot garden?

It depends on the length of the frost-free growing season where you live. Where I am the growing season is only 4 months between that last spring frost and the first fall frost, so any vegetables that take over 80-90 days to mature need a head start indoors.

The longer maturing vegetables that get headstarts here are broccoli, peppers, melons, winter squashes, and tomatoes.

If you are in an area with a long growing season you can start seeds directly in the garden.

Most cucurbrits (cucumbers sqaush zucchini melons) do not like thier roots disturbed so i always direct sow them in the garden
