Trying to get started

Assuming I start my plants indoors:
1. When and how should I change watering from keeping the soil constantly moits?
2. How big do the plants have to be before I move the container out into the yard so they can get sunlight?

I started some herbs (basil and chives) in the house in a plastic container. After I saw green shoots I moved them outside so they could get sun and they fried. The plastic cover I put over the container to retain moisture probably didn't help!

If I moisten the soil when the container is outdoors, the soil dries out by the time I get home from work. Is this OK or do I need to keep soil constantlly moist until the seeds sprout?

I live in Phoenix, Arizona and it is starting to get hot -- highs in the mid to high 80s but we will be in the 90s and 100s soon.

My parents had green thumbs but like most kids, I didn't pay attention and my thumbs are more black Thanks for the help of folks in the forum

keep it moist and mulched

The desert heat is tough to combat in the garden for non succulent plants. The soil has to stay moist for garden plants to make it so, while Mel doesn't mention it, us desert type folks still have to mulch our beds in the summer too.

I use the peat pucks in the trays to start. Once true leaves appear or I see roots comming out of the puck I put the whole thing in a 3" peat pot. This gives the plant more moisture available and a larger area to espand roots. I then put them outside in a place where they only get morning sun and afternoon shade. I check them every day and water accordingly, typically every day. I put the 3" peat pot inside of a 3" plastic or clay pot to hold it. When ready to plant, just pop it out of the pot and plant. Have several tomato and pepper plants doing well so far. I did fry my herbs. Let them go too long without water. Have not had much luck with herbs in pots during the summer. Most of the problem seems to be keeping the roots from cooking. Actually burned my hand with hot, damp soil cleaning out a pot once.

I used left over MM and old greenhouse seedling pots. I plant the seeds in them and set them in a pan with a 1/4" of water. The little seedling pots soak up the water and stay as wet as they need. It saves alot of time trying to water each little pot. They stay evenly moist and all you need to do is add a little water to the shallow pan. I got that idea from a Burpee seed starting kit.
