I am a Horticulturist/small scale herb grower on the West Coast of sunny South Africa. My wife and I plus our three children stay on a working honey/sheep/cattle farm. We rent about half a hectare of land in the centre of the farm around the house in which we stay. One of our main goals when moving onto the farm 18 months ago, was to turn a seemingly barren piece of over-farmed land into something productive that will put fresh produce in our kitchen. I also embarked on growing herbs and salads for resale. I am planning to implement some SFG, due to the poor nature of our soil.

Welcome John! You sound like you have some good gardening experience already! It will be so interesting to read how your gardening and especially your sfg goes in Africa! I hope your business goes well and is prosperous for you and your family! You probably already know this but getting as big a compost pile going as you can will help your garden the most! I have had just a little experience with compost piles but there are people on this site that know most everything there is to know! Good luck!

Wow! Do you get access to the sheep and cow manure for your farm? It would be lovely if they would share some of that black gold with you! Post pics when you get a chance - we would LOVE to see what is happening on your farm in Africa.
