That's not humour but the truth HONEST . The weather is so bad I have been and washed the sun shade paint off the glasshouse this morning with dish drops and a long handled soft brush , the rain has done the rinsing off all on its own .

I've had to do it just so I can try and harvest enough sunshine ( when it decides to appear ) , to bring the five tomato flowers ( out of six plants ) into fruit .Sad Sad

@CC

I planted one tom laying down and had my doubts, but it is doing better than some of my other toms that I planted vertical for the last 35 years.

One mistake is that the one I laied down is against the other tomato plant right beside it; didn't think it through at first but next year lay them all down on the same angle so they don't grown against each other.

@floyd

That's funny about the angle thing. The stuff we don't think about. My lab toms are laid every which way, too, but I think they have enuff space to handle it. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

In another thread called Tomato Depth Experiment, Bea has planted side by sides at different depths and isn't noticing that one way is better than the other so far. *shrug* Wonder if any are layed down...?

Last 5 days harvest.

My neighbor did a good job of keeping them picked. This is just what she saved for me.

Since I didn't pick them I'm not sure if they are purple calabash or Eva Purple ball. Will have to wait for wave 2 to be sure.
The gnarley red one hiding near the orange one is definately a Costoluto Genovese. I picked it today. And the big yellowish one is a great white beefsteak. Some large red cherries and a few either romas or san marzano paste.

Checked out the Eva Purple Ball today which has some almost ripe maters and now know that is definately a Purple Calabash in the bowl.

Don't be, I'm a few zones warmer than you and these were the first substantial wave of ripenings. Yours will be there soon.

Tomato Avatars

My tomatoes are not doing good this year. I planted all heirlooms except for one hybrid early girl. This is a picture of my Black Cherry.

I have 2 brand new babies on one of my volunteers. It is apparently one of the paste tomatoes from last year. Checked them again this morning and both of them have a perfect little peck taken out of them. ARGH!

I wonder if the smoke has anything to do with the tomatoes? Mine aren't doing the greatest either (not that they ever are though lol). Between the smoke, heat, and wind it's no wonder they are having issues. Your's don't look bad though Boz

Here are my reisenstraube toms. I have 4 plants that seem to be doing well, but nothing ripe yet.

I tried to upload a larger picture here, but for some reason nothing happens when I click "host it" (I have uploaded pictures before, so I do know how to).

There is a picture file size limit, but it has changed several times since the forum started, and I can't tell you exactly what it is. Your description sounds like you're trying to upload a picture that's too big. Try reducing the size of your picture before you upload it.

I have had nothing happen when I click on "host it" many times. The first time, I was at a loss to explain it - it just looked like I hadn't even clicked it. Turned out it was working, I just had to wait and wait. Maybe the server was experiencing heavy traffic, maybe the picture was large enough it took a while to load, but eventually the window with the links comes up.

Here is my first ripe Mortgage Lifter! rock on Guess whose having a tomato & cheese sandwich for lunch-Woot! It's actually pretty big-I was blessed with large utilitarian hands for a woman (size 10 driving gloves) Shocked -all the better to hold my power tools with.
