We've got (yellow!) watermelon!

Post  elliephant on 7/6/2012, 1:06 pm

The one with a yellow rind and pink flesh is a Golden Midget that unfortunately got picked too soon. There was another one that grew at the same time and it got cracked open and bugs got to it, so I harvested this one without examining it closely enough. I grew Golden Midget last summer too and am not hugely impressed.

The other one is Yellow Doll. It looks like a normal watermelon on the outside and I couldn't remember what I'd planted where, so I was quite surprised when I cut it open. Had to look through my seed packets to see what it was. I got it from the Sample Seed Shop and it's an F1 Hybrid. SO GOOD! Very sweet and the kids stood there and ate the whole thing up as fast as I could cut it and get the seeds out. This is definitely going to be a keeper in our garden and I will devote more space to it next year. I will also hand pollinate to see if I can increase our yields, now that it was such a hit.

I was racking my brain trying to find a 'spot' in the garden for watermelon. My boyfriend told me to just grow it in a pot on the side of the house, then it could sprawl and take up all the space in the lawn it wanted without me sacrificing anything I wanted in the garden. I think we're going to do the same thing with the large pumpkins I couldn't find a spot for...

refused to leave town without at least trying one of the watermelons. Plucked the biggest one this morning and shared with my friends in No. VA. this evening.

It was actually ripe and very sweet.

Garrett - That is exactly the size babies we have. I didn't think they were even getting pollinated but the bees have been busy these last few days. And I've also discovered cantaloupe babies too! Woohoo rock on

Adorable picture Kay! It is clear from your daughter's face that Yellow Dolls are one tasty watermelon! clap I've never heard of Yellow Dolls, but I'll definitely consider adding them to my SFG next year along with my Sugar Babies. I planted four Sugar Babies on June 3 and here they today. There are a bunch of little babies, but these three seem to have gotten a jump start!
