I totally forgot to post pics of my babies.  I picked up my 10 just over 2 weeks ago.  All are doing great so far, had a couple pasty butts the first few days.  My daughter picked out the australorp as her chicken (who is very friendly), and so far the other 2 friendliest girls are the golden comet and the dominique.  My easter egger hates me...

Day I brought them home

Happy Easter!

It's so funny how they stick their heads out isn't it?? She has 8, and the heads poke out all over! When they get too warm, they sort of draaaaaaaaaaag out of her. So much fun. The grandkids and myself have learned so much watching this hen and her babies Smile

The girls went a little crazy today taking selfies Razz

today In our familygardens the girls stepped out for some fun.......

*DumbNot* got her feathers a bit ruffled! (she is the one that always picks on the lower girls of the pecking order)....I think someone told her off!! Razz

*Red* was Queen of the compost pile! (she is always getting picked on by *DumbNot*.... but today she gave her self a boost of confidence and forage to the top of the compost pile!

*Thunder & Penny* found some left over tasty bits in the dogs dish (*Thunder* the leader of the clan..... sharing.....a snack with *Penny* the very bottom of the pecking order)....its a good day when the Top girl indulges with the bottom girl in a treat!

*Zephyr* was on the hunt for bugs.....chit chatting the entire time!

and....well....*Big Bird* was just plain ANNOYED with me! rofl

Happy chicken keeping!

Okay, so HOW did they take selfies???  I know about the octopus who can take photos of the folks who come to see him, but chicken selfies?

Or do I need more coffee to get my brain in gear?

Adorable, btw!

I was looking at a pictorial list of the most expensive home in each US state.

The house in PA was the only house not shown.  Instead, they chose to show this out-building on the property.

My first house probably cost less!  Note the caption.  I guess rich folk have aviaries, and the rest of us have coops!  Razz

Any one living on that estate probably wouldn't go out and collect the eggs. They would probably have designer birds for show. Very Happy

Re: who has chickens

Post  Kelejan on 6/5/2015, 7:35 pm

It's funny how top of the pecking order often indulges the lowest bird.  Have any of you thought, when in a group, about the dynamics of tha t group?

I know that in elephant families there is a pecking order, and also in wolf groups. Alpha male and females etc. and usually everyone "knows their place".

I had a friend whose husband thought we should all be like ants or bees, everyone should know their place and they should be happy with it. I guess he believed in the caste system in India and the Class system in England. etc. His idea of a peaceful world.

Just loved your pictures, Rose. Very Happy

Anybody grow milo (sorghum) for your chickens (and goats)? I'm getting a packet of seeds to try and it will be more than I can use, so if anyone wants to swap for something, let me know. geek

Finally got our chicken coop extension painted. The main coop was Hubby's big project last year. The yard on the right is for the banties (rescued a few years ago). We're afraid to let them out because of the hawks, so now they have their own protected play area, including trees.
