New From Maine

Post  Nancy04684 on 7/15/2012, 12:36 pm

Hi, I am a new gardener from Maine. Started out doing some landscaping around my house a couple of years ago. And this year have started my first vegetable garden. So far so good...except for the broccoli. I bought four plants as transplants and they have all flowered before they were really ready to be"'picked". Oh well...trial and error!

welcome Bolting broccoli happens to the best of us when the weather gets hot too soon. What else are you growing?

Tell us more about your gardening and post pictures. We love pictures so much that we have a emoticon :theuseless: Do you use the method outlined in the book ALL NEW SQUAREFOOT GARDENING. This is the how to manual that is used by and supported by most of the members of this forum. We love the concept.

Kay

Welcome Nancy from another Mainer. I started my SFG in 2009 in Raymond. Love the method.
My broccoli bolted, too, except for only 2 of the Packman variety. I think I'll grow those exclusively. You can always start some seeds this month for a fall crop of broccoli. They do better. No heat to contend with after its initial germinating and early start, with fall temps arriving and making for a good growing time.

I am also growing some pole beans, snap peas, carrots, zuccini, summer squash, pickling cucumbers, (my "normal" cukes aren't doing so hot...darn pesky bugs),tomatoes, lettuce, & watermelon. I have pumpkins and canteloupe growing container style and of course a nice assortment of herbs including cat nip which my cats just finally figured out lol

Oh and please tell me there is a spell check and where I can find it LOL!!!! Embarassed
