I'm now tumbling into compost!

I have the sweetest husband! We went to "the big city" today and went to Lowes, per my husbands request; "just to look around." He went to the tools and I, of course, went to the garden department. I really had no intention of buying anything "just lookin around." And then I saw it! It was the item that I have been longing for. A tumbling composter and it was a really great price! Shocked I stood there and longingly looked it over and then proceeded on to an item I needed. My husband wanted to show me something so I went in the store and wouldn't you know we wound up right near the garden department door. I said hey can I show you something. He said sure. So we walked out and I showed him the composter and I stood there and drooled over it. drooling Much to my surprise my husband said "if it means that much to you get it!" I said "really!" He said "sure why not." This was me in the store. rahrah I have been wanting one for a couple years. I'm so excited! I've been turning my compost pile manually for a long time. I'm looking forward to having a second compost pile and it will be easier with my new "Tumbling Composter!"

That sounds great, congrats... I did the same last year and one teensy word of advice
My first whole year with it was just MUCK....
So this year i am scrounging around to find leaves and grass to put in before I start putting in household stuff.
It really is fun, just don't let it get too wet .... like me Embarassed

Thanks GWN I was wondering how to get started. I tend to have more greens than browns. I do have a bag of dried leaves and twigs a friend gave me. Should I throw some soil in also? Can anyone tell me how to compost the leaves you shuck off of the corn cobs?

here's a pretty cool link for composting, and it tells what "greens" are and what "browns" are. i was surprised at what they really are. You kind of have to mess with it a bit, but put in some numbers and check it out. Pretty informative. If all else fails, throw it in and compost away!!

Oh and one other really important tip I learned this year with my tumbler is to add all the empty toilet paper tubes....
It was my big breakthrough with my tumbler this year.
The toilet paper cardboard thingies... keep your compost aerated. Smile

As to the toilet paper tubes, do you toss them in whole, shred, or tear them into pieces? How long does it take for them to break down?

I leave them whole to allow for aeration in the tumbler
Once it gets going they break down

I just started some new compost in my new tumbler. I had enough leaves left so I threw them in as well as a bunch of portulaca type weed that's supposed to be edible and some other kitchen stuff I've been waiting to throw in. I also threw in a little bit of compost soil. I scored some worm castings today. I was wondering should I put some of them in and if so how much?

Personally, I would add the worm casting directly to the garden or save it to mix with finished compost.

I'd also save them to add a few at a time to each bed for a top dressing & when replenishing the nutrients , mix them in the final blended compost .
