muddy onions... or is it something else

Post  smileandbehappy on 7/27/2012, 5:59 am

my onions seem to have this moist muddy/pooh type mess at the top of the stalks. Does anyone know what this is or if there is anything I should be doing to get rid of it. The onions have garlic and herbs and tomatoes around them and they are all doing fine.

Oh dear, are you getting lots of rain this summer? What you describe sounds like onion neck rot. a fungal disease.

please help.

Post  smileandbehappy on 8/1/2012, 9:04 am

ok. I cannot upload a picture. It is definitely some sort of bug. Its the size of a ladybird and its a brown muddy colour. Any ideas what I should be doing would be greatly appreciated. I feel very useless and they seem to be slowly spreading themselves from one stalk to the next. I don't want them spreading to my other veg.

Do you think the bugs caused the damage or do you think they came after?

ok, this is a piccie of the darn things.(or maybe not if I haven't done this right!). They are eating from the top of the stalk and down through the middle!! the onion stalks came first and then the bugs.
