aphids: do I need to get rid of them?

Post  happy232 on 8/8/2012, 12:36 pm

Hi all, 2 questions please =)

1. I have aphids on my cucumber leaves. Do I need to spray them off? or only if they are on the plant?

2. will tulle protect my new lettuce from aphids? and if I use tulle, do I still need to plant nasturtiums or other aphid loving plant?

(aphids did DESTROY my zuchinni by bringing in tons of ants =(

Spray the aphids, they can transmit diseases on your plants. The ants probably brought the aphids to your plants because ants like the honeydew the aphids produce as they feed off the sap of your plants, so ants will help take care of the aphids like that. I believe the aphids will do much more harm to your plants than the ants will so I would get rid of them if I were you! Good luck!I like to plant trap crops too, I have nasturtiums and petunias.

I am not sure of your growing season so if I were you I would go to a local nursery or home depot and look for some geraniums, petunias, or nasturtiums. Next spring you could start from seed too! They will also help by attracting pollinators to your veggies as well, and yes, don't cover them with tulle because these are the ones you are "giving" to the bugs Very Happy ! Have fun flower shopping! Here is a link to companion planting, if you scroll down to the flowers it will tell you what attracts/repels what!
