Haha, I have never made the connection to SNOW peas and actual SNOW silly me until now. I hope they survive too! It was -4 degrees here this morning, burrrrrr. I am currently snuggled on the couch with my two year old sharing a baby blanket! Life is good! The hubbs and 4 year old are sleeping in, lazy bums!

Ready for the snow Rooster? My asparagus was shipped last week so I hope we have a quick melt off so I can get it planted. We are supposed to get 12-18 inches, we need all the moisture we can get!

Looks like snow here tonight. Is our whole section getting snow this weekend, or only us more northerly types?

My snow peas are still snug under ground. I hope staying cozy and willing to pop up late in the week.

Hoping this is the end of it for the year. According to some of the oldsters around here, once the robins appear we have one more big snow storm left in the season. Robins have been sighted for the last 2 weeks. Stay tuned.....

Western Mountains and High Plains: What's Your Weather Like ?

Post  johnp on 4/8/2013, 8:46 am

I planted my kale and broccoli plants along with snow peas, spinach and mustard seeds. The apple trees are getting close to bloom. Of cource it's going to snow and freeze (12 degrees here). This afternoon I will cover the plants with black pots and then cover with old sheets and hope it's enough.

Re Western Mountains Mountains and High Plains: Whats Your Weather Like??

Post  Lillyz on 4/8/2013, 10:50 pm

It was 75 F when I went to run errands today. We just started getting high winds a few minutes ago. I looked at the weather channel and it said we should be getting some SNOW by 5 a.m. I do hope that it brings a lot of moisture here. It is very, very dry.

Re: Western Mountains and High Plains: What's Your Weather Like?

Post  Triciasgarden on 4/9/2013, 12:22 am

We have had plenty of rain this afternoon and evening. Right now with the wind chill it feels like 31 degrees. It will get down to 32 degrees tonight with more rain and probably some snow by morning. For sure snow in the mountains which are about 15 miles from us. We have wind at 20-30 mph winds with possible gusts up to 70 mph. I planted almost a full 4' x 6' bed, peas, different types of lettuce, spinach, and I can't remember what else right now. I am hoping that my seeds have decided to take their time to sprout. Thursday we will have another storm, but milder than this one. It sure seems like so many areas are getting these storms! It is so spread out!

Our water levels are below average so far, which surprises me because we have had plenty of snow and rain. We were below average last year. Our reservoirs need to get filled up more so we will not have too many water restrictions this year. We are not as bad as some though I am sure!

So far our monster spring storm is kind of a dud as far as moisture is concerned. I got about 5 raindrops at my place last night and a bit of snow. Hard to tell how much with the blowing winds.

re:

We had high winds all night. Right before I went to sleep I heard a crack sound! I thought that one of the big trees had lost a branch. But it was dark, and I was tired so I didnt go out and look. I woke up this morning to a dusting of snow. I didnt see any big branches on the ground (or on the house!), but I did notice that one of the "teepees" with the plastic on it had flipped over! I had weighted down the plastic, but I guess with the high winds it must have acted like a sail. Good thing we have high fence or it would be by Oklahoma by now. The snow peas and radishes look fine btw.

School was cancelled yesterday and today, I closed the coffee shop too. Yesterday morning we only had about 6 inches but the roads were solid ice. The railroad has been shut down but luckily hubby got home right before they quit calling trains, a few of our buddies have been stuck in WY for two days now (normal is 12 hours). Now we have about 20 inches! I love snow days!

We have seen narry a flake so far, but the new forecast is that we are to be hit this afternoon, and through tomorrow evening we are in line to get 4-8 inches of the white fluff.

Western Mountains and High Plains: What's Your Weather Like?

Post  johnp on 4/10/2013, 5:06 pm

This morning we were at 15 degrees with a trace of snow. The kale and Broccoli were covered with black pots and covered with old sheets. I took the covers off around noon and the Brocc. doesn't look good but the kale looks fine. The garlic looks fine also.

Post  Lillyz on 4/10/2013, 6:56 pm

We didnt have any rain or snow today, but yesterday was very cold and today it still is in the 30s. I did manage to put the plastic back on the bed that blew over, I took a look at my "snow" peas and radishes and they were frost bitten, I looked inside the other bed that didnt blow over and the strawberries look fine... I guess I will go to one of the big box stores and see if they have any peas left. I wouldnt have minded if we would have got alot of snow/rain with this storm, but all it did was howl and just a dusting of snow....

Same here Lilly. It was 9 degrees when i left for work this morning, and I feel if it's going to be that cold this time of year, at least give us a good dumping! The Loveland and ft Collins areas are already on water restrictions if I'm not mistaken. Way to early for that.
