Hi from Brian in Allen, TX

Post  kb5won on 8/24/2012, 2:35 pm

Hi group! I'm a backyard gardener in Allen, Texas. I also try to introduce lots of new people to growing their own vegetables through a hands-on gardening class I teach called Citizen Gardener, which is pretty much SFG plus some more stuff. I just signed up for the forum, about to poke around a bit.

pics of my garden: oops, not allowed to do that!

Pepper, after taking a Permaculture Design Course last spring, my teacher offered to help start a gardening program here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that he teaches in Austin, TX. It is called Citizen Gardener. We tailor the information for this area and climate, and the program incorporates many of the Permaculture principals (such as building healthy soil, building community, starting small). The class is a little different in that it is all hands-on. By the end of the class that spans 2 days, we have built 2 raised beds (one of them is a square foot bed), a large compost pile, a trellis for vertical growth, and a hoop-house that can be used as shade in the summer and a greenhouse in the winter. Oh, we also build a rain barrel. Both of the beds are planted with vegetables and flowers. We hold the classes at community gardens. Students are asked to volunteer in the garden after class also.

If you want to see some pictures, I have lots posted online. Get to them by going to northtexasvegetablegardeners.com, click on Citizen Gardener, Classes, Past Classes. Each class has a link to pictures. (or cut/paste address below)
