I don't have those chain stores here, but I do have a bunch of others. Yay, hope to go freezer shopping soon.

and Plantoid! you just crack me up, even when I sit there trying to decipher some of the stuff you say Razz in one of your other posts you used a word, "brill" I was briefly stumped till it hit me it must be European shorthand for brilliant, which made me feel like a doofus, or it was special "Plantoid-speech" ! Either way, funny.

I have to confess to being a raving medically & old age induced dyslexic and on days when disabilities kicks hard it gets worse Laughing .

I just don't see the mistakes most of the times. Spell check drives me mad , for even with a check system I still can't fathom what's incorrect especially when spell check substitutes a different word

But words like Brill have been in use in the armed forces for 40 yrs or more and have entered civil speech systrem ... guess where I was from 1966 to 1980 ? Wink

Very good then. Again, I learn even more than gardening on this site. Thanks.

Those years you mentioned takes me back, the years of my youth and young adult stage, age 10 through 24. Those days where anything was possible and good health was taken for granted and most of the older loved ones had not begun to die off! :boohoo:
ok...back to freezers and such...!

Do you watch movies? If so rent or search the tvguide for A Christmas Story. I thought everybody had seen that movie.

Not much space left in our house freezer or deep freeze in the garage. We have talked about getting another side-by-side for the garage...and we are still harvesting veggies.

We had a Frigidaire 16.6 Cu. Ft. Upright Model: FFH17F7HW until
the compressor died in it, it was a great unit and we will buy another
when we save up the cash. My only caviot on this purchase is, shop
around and get the 10 year warranty on the compressor. This model
is sold under several brand names the only difference is the brand
name and the length of warranty on the compressor.

Just read that chest freezers don't self defrost whereas you can get uprights that do.

Re: Run out of freezer space yet?

Post  plantoid on 8/28/2012, 6:13 pm

I defrosted our chestie about five weeks ago when things were at low stock levels .

Simply and quickly bunged the contents into an old double bed duvet that was going to go to a dog rescue place , covered it up well and added a single duvet that was on the same journey . left the lids off the chest and put up a big pedstal fan to blow air into the chest.

Once it started to defrost after about 40 min I used a wooden spatula to ease off any wet ice and used the " Aquavac " to slurp out any water in the bottom . Then washed it out in a weak washing up liquid solution with two teaspoons of bi carb in the water to get rid of any fats and bacteria.
Gave it another slurp session , dried it out with an old clean bath towel 9 also enroute to the dog rescue place ) switched it on and repacked the thing in a better order .

It was not really a chore as in boring task, it was a revelation .....for amongst the hiding goodies therein I discovered we had some cod fillets from last years boat fishing session.. It still tasted and smelt OK even after 10 months of being vacuum packed in the freezer ( it's set on minus 25 oC )

Did some weeding & flower tending whilst it was defrosting.

Looks like the perfect dream freezer has not been developed for consumers.
To me the perfect "dream" freezer is probably closest to a supermarket freezer. Shelves, self defrost, with glass to see the contents. And the kicker - how about those supermarket freezer light sensors that light up the contents when you get near it? Conveniently eyeing goodies without rooting around and spilling out cold air. This fantasy freezer will somehow be energy efficient too. Mission impossible, so I will dream on. Back to reality, chest or upright..

I only need to defrost my chest freezer ever 3+ years, it just does not build up frost unless something keeps the lid from closing totally.
I thought this was interesting summary by Consumer Reports http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine-archive/september-2009/appliances/freezers/overview/freezers-ov.htm

Dreaming...

Post  CapeCoddess on 8/29/2012, 12:56 pm

I would like an upright self defrosting freezer with multiple glass doors...like 4 or even 6.

Of course, a self defrosting chest would be just peachy, too. You'd think they could come up with that already. thinking

I think I have read that Kenmore and Frigidaire offer self defrosting chest freezers.

Re: Run out of freezer space yet?

Post  cpl100 on 8/29/2012, 1:55 pm

The thing to remember about chest freezers is that you want to fill it with stuff you will not be using frequently. It is best for things you have holding in long-term storage, not popsicles you are feeding the kids daily. This is the advice I was given when I made my purchase and I found it truly helpful. There are many days I do not open the freezer. There are periods where I open it once, maybe twice, a day for several days.

I have had my freezer for five years and have not had the need to defrost it using it as I posted. I do now see a little bit of frost build-up in one area so I know I will have to defrost at some time.

Use your refrigerator freezer for stuff you have to have handy and use frequently. Open the chest freezer to take out stuff to move to the refrigerator freezer (or large items as you use them) when you need them. Using this way, defrosting should not be a yearly thing, not to mention the energy savings.

That looks terrific but it won't happen, by the way according to a conversion table that freezer would be $8,035.25 in American dollars!

You could always go for the stand alone walk in deep freezer it measures 8 x 8 x 7 foot high internally It is adjustable rack shelved all round, from floor to ceiling ..you only need a 40 amp 110 volt supply to run it.

Tack on a large sealable airlock porch and you won't loose too much " coolth " when you go in & out.
