1-2-3 BOLT!!!

Picked a few leaves of my fall planted lettuce yesterday for a salad and all was well. Today, all plants of all four varieties are bolting. It is amazing to me the built-in communication between lettuce varieties. They must be in competition with each other to see which can bolt the highest and quickest. So far the oak leaf is winning with the black seeded simpson not far behind. Thankfully the spring lettuce is up and will need thinning in a couple of days.

Blushed butter oak started bolting the other day (still yum, shared with the neighbors since it was more than we could eat), but the Romaine and the buttercrunch hasn't yet and they were all in a tight cluster. I'll be pulling them all in the next few days, though, I expect they will bolt practically any second.

I do envy the northerners their "extended" lettuce season in the summer, but I'm willing to bet they envy our "extended" winter lettuce even more. I never dreamed I'd ever have lettuce fresh from the garden in the dead of winter (thanks to the cold-frame) when I was growing up in Nebraska.
