thompson's water seal applied to wood for box...

Post  swinghamer on Wed Apr 14, 2010 3:51 pm

Hi...I know it is not good to use treated lumber to build a box for a SFG. we bought untreated lumber, and I, not thinking, promptly applied some clear thompson's water seal to all sides of the box, inside and outside. is this OK? i know the carton says the contents are toxic if ingested, but will anything actually leach into my mix and into any roots?? I'm pressed for time/money and cannot build another box, but what if i sanded the inside down or applied some plasticy contact paper to the inside surfaces? or is it not going to hurt anything??

thanks!
amanda

Welcome to the forums Amanda

You can just buy some plastic and put that in the boxes before you put in the mix to separate the mix from the wood, just go for the thick stuff (5 or 6 mil). There are actually a few people here that will just buy the treated lumber and then put a plastic barrier in there.
