Northern Arizona (Prescott) and new to SFG

Post  georgene.lockwood on 10/28/2012, 5:17 pm

I had my first raised bed garden this past year and for a city gal I did pretty well. Tomatoes, peppers, cukes, onions, zucchini all produced and I canned my fanny off. But now I want to do more and am totally sold on SFG as the method. I'm adding a 25' x 60' fenced in area to my garden (lots of critters here) and will probably add 4 4' x 4' beds next season. I also purchased a greenhouse that will go in the perimeter.

Bought my seeds already from heirloomseeds.com. Ordered the Victory Garden. I probably won't plant everything, but will try most everything, at least one plant. I will be experimenting all winter with the greenhouse to see what I can grow in there.

Would love to meet other Prescott area SFG-ers!!!

glad you\'re here to the forum! I grew up in Scottsdale but am now living in the Tampa, FL area. VERY different climate. I love Prescott! (and I even pronounce it correctly!) Best of luck with your expanded gardens.

Thanks, guys. I heard about a great square foot garden on White Spar Road I'm going to take a look at this week. Hoping to find some other people locally to share info with in person. I will take pictures and post. My first project is to redo one of my raised beds (made out of concrete block) with SFG method. I'm going to go the easy way on this one and by the pre-mixed soil. They sell it at our Home Depot. I'll just put down the weed cloth and put the new soil on top. I have onion sets and garlic sets to put in.

Can't wait to try some things in the greenhouse when we get it up, but that will have to wait until the retaining wall is finished and the fencing is in, probably sometime next week.

If I may offer you a suggestion, when you get the pre-made mix, add 2 or 3 types of compost. The pre-mixed stuff is notoriously low on the compost content.

Thanks for the tip on adding compost. I have my own to add, so will do that, although it says there are a bunch of different types of decayed matter included on the package. But I figure when it comes to compost, more is better...right?
