Smash Leaves in the Bags

Post  Triciasgarden on 10/29/2012, 10:38 pm

I raked up leaves today and tonight and bagged them. Some of the time I was sitting and kneeling on the ground as I filled the bags. It just seemed that the leaves were taking up a lot of space and I started to break up the leaves with my hand and then leaning on them with my hands. I thought this will make it easier to mow over them to shred them. As I went along, I got the idea of stepping on the leaves after I got them in the bag. I filled a bag up partially and then smashed those, filled it up some more and smashed them, etc. I was able to fit probably 8 bags of leaves into three. I thought I would share this because there are probably some people who are not able to shred leaves with a mower or shredder and this would break up the leaves some for their compost pile.

Think of the fun the kids could have jumping on the bags of leaves to break them up!

I should imagine you have dry leaves, Tricia. Would be hard to smash wet leaves.

Make sure you have very strong bags and leave a way for the air to escape. Otherwise I see exploded bags of leaves all over the yard.

Also make sure you don't get sticks in the bags - don't ask how I know!

Yep dry leaves. Can you imagine a bag sealed with air, kid bounces on it and ends up in the top of a tree, lol! I did get a small hole (in a very thick bag) probably from a twig. It was at the end so it wasn't a problem. I have had bigger holes before though and learned!

Holes in the bags are easy to deal with. It's the gashes up the legs that get irritating!
