Hailing from NE Mississippi

Post  BritLit on 11/1/2012, 1:42 pm

I'm a new poster to the forum, but have been a lurker for a long time. I have learned much from SFG members and follow your posts daily. So, if you ever had a feeling someone was watching over your shoulder, it was me. Smile

Spent my youth on our family farm around my dad's military moves. Married a military guy whose family farmed as well. Every military move was riddled with livestock and a new farm somewhere. U-Hauls often full of gates, feed troughs, and farm implements. More soil changes than I could ever imagine.

As a community service project, my family started small garden plots for widows who had to give up gardening. Raised beds eventually became a perfect fit and that is where it all started...

glad you\'re here

Wow, I know you had a lot of moves. Are you still building community gardens and are you supporting mostly veteran's widows? I assume you are useing SFG techniques now for any you build.

Can you post some pictures of your projects.

Ka

Re: Hailing from NE Mississippi

I have returned to work after my daughter left for college, so I have been more limited with time. My small, rural Master Gardener group obtained a grant for a community garden after our area was hit with flooding two years ago. They are currently working on various display areas and I hope to incorporate a SFG into the design plan.

I say "they" because I have left them hanging this summer after I injured both rotator cuffs. Hubby felt that was the perfect time to demolish our personal garden and move heavy equipment in to remove some trees that had grown into a shade problem. It's scary looking right now!!

I have worked row crop gardens all of my life. My in-laws are almost 80 and I had to find something smarter. Naturally they didn't want to give up row crop, so we started with a waist high 4x12 strawberry bed. They are now planning more beds for next year. After the shoulder injuries/recovery, it is SFG fever around here. My daughter is the photo bug, so I'll see if she can mail me some pics.
