My first 2013 seed catalog arrived!

Post  quiltbea on 11/17/2012, 6:46 pm

I received my first seed catalog of the 2013 season from www.highmowingseeds.com yesterday (Vermont). Wow, they sure are quick. Its the first.
You know how I'll be spending my Sat afternoon....browsing and checking off my wish list.
All their seeds are USDA Organic which is the reason I love their seeds since I grow organic as does our community garden.

I love High Mowing Seeds; that's where the Gilberties came from. I love you

Yes, camprn. I saw Gilberties in the catalog. I got some seeds from you (thank you again) a couple years ago and have been growing them in the community garden since. Gave some transplants to a friend two years in a row and she loves them, too.

I see a few I want to try. I'm going to try organic hybrids this season. I may not be able to save seeds, but hope to have less problems with the viruses and wilts this time by using disease-resistant varieties like Iron Lady, Sunkist and Esterina, all F1s. There's also Rutger's and Roma VF Paste which aren't hybrids but have built-in resistance so I want to try those as well. If they do well, I can save seeds for another year.
I'm trying to keep my list short but that never happens.

cheers for you quiltbea! I can't wait for my High Mowing Catalog to show up. It's a good one for sure.
I actually got my first catalog for 2013 yesterday too. Pinetree. If you aren't signed up to receive it yet, here you go:
https://www.superseeds.com/home.php
It's pretty decent and worthy of receiving.

Pinetree catalog requested also. I spent Friday evening reading through my High Mowing catalog. I'm not sure I have enough space for everything I selected...

Seed Savers Exchange in the mail! But none of the carrots pictures on the cover compare to the one GWN has been brandishing! Inside, the selection of peppers, hot and mild, is unsurpassed. As for peas, we will be trying Sutton's Harbringer, a pale podded heirloom, touted as "very early heavy cropping variety" and "excellent quality eating pea." Come on Spring! Nonna

I haven't ordered a seed catalog in years and just recently ordered and received today a Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds catalog. I am so surprised with the large size of the catalog and the large beautiful photos! Don't bother me family, I will be busy until further notice!

If you live in the Pacific Northwest, a catalog from One Green World (onegreenworld.com) is a must. This is the go-to nursery for fruit trees, berry bushes, and little known but delicious rare varieties like: pawpaw, quince, mulberries, mayhaw, medlars....in short, a wonderful catalog to wander through when planninge for a fruit tree or two, or other fruits particularly well suited to this part of the world. Got my catalog today and am trying to confince PapaVino that I really, really do need both a Crimea Russian Quince and a the small Mellow Quince. Anyone out there who also remembers quince jelly? Got my Johnny's catalog the other day. Seems to be what alot of the organic farmers on the Cape use so I ordered it. So many choices, so little space...It's huge! Not like the skinny, but eye-popping, White Flower Farms one.

One of the best things about Johnny's is that they have a crop information box at the beginning of each veggie's listings. Very helpful.
They also feature many crops that are best grown in the northeast or other cooler climes.
