Help me name this plant (KRAUUI)

Post  maria101 on 11/25/2012, 5:12 am

Hi everyone! We have a newly bought plant and it was labeled as "Krauui" (see picture attached). We were told that it was from Thailand. I tried to google but it doesn't seem to exist. Any idea on this "Krauui" plant? Your response would be very welcome. Thanks!

Could you get a pic with the flowers open? That would help me a lot.

I would suggest going back to where it was purchased to find the scientific name. I have a feeling this shrub is mis-labled as I too could find no information. Though it did turn up as a surname a few times.

Sorry I wan't able to take a picture of the flower opened. It was raining hard the whole day and my camera isn't water-proof.

Anyway, we bought this at a fair, and the seller was an avid collector but I think he also has no idea of the plant's scientific name nor it's real name.

IT IS AN ELAEOCARPUS! Thank you so much Ms. Carmelita for your help! My mother will be so happy to know its name, finally!

How come it was named Krauui, it sounded so far from Rudraksha! Haha.

Thanks for your help everyone!

That's grand! E. grandiflorus

Post  carmelita on 8/7/2013, 10:13 pm

There are probably 300 different types of Elaeocarpus so remember to include the 'grandiflorus'. Hope to see photos of the blossoms one day.

It is also called Anyang Anyang or Blue Olive Berry, but I try to stay away from the common names as it causes confusion.  For example, one of it's other names is 'Lily of the Valley Tree', but if you research by that common name you will find it comes back to an Oxydendrum which is a sorrel or sourwood tree native to America and valued for honey production. And that would be just wrong.

Re: Help me name this plant (KRAUUI)

I have heard from my friend in Thailand and she provided this link to a forum. It is written in Thai, so you must have your computer translate it into English. Translations done by computers are not always perfect, but you will see your tree and get the gist of the conversations.

 http://www.magnoliathailand.com/webboard/index.php?topic=1204.0

The interesting thing is that the translation calls the tree 'krai prolapse'. Making allowances for the word prolapse to probably mean the way the flowers cascade in a downward way, we are left with the word "krai'. I have asked my friend for an explanation of that word as to my eye there is a similarity to 'krauui', and possibly something had gotten lost in the translation or there was a variation is spelling when your plant was labeled.

Khrai yoi = Elaeocarpus grandiflorus J E Smith

Post  carmelita on 8/8/2013, 2:31 pm

Here is a link for the same plant.

http://www.globinmed.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=100242:elaeocarpus-grandiflorus-je-smith&catid=369:e

According to this site, the Northern Thai language name for this plant is
'Khrai yoi'. To my untrained ears this could be written as 'krauui'.

Hi

Thank you for the welcome. I'm slowly (very slowly) learning the ropes of this forum and keep forgetting to click on

Hope that the original poster marie101 will post photos of the tree in flower.

LOL!  I understand.  Somehow when I signed up, I had that clicked and had so many emails on posts replying...  I had to turn it off.  Now I just go thru everything when I can.

Looks like I may be your regional host...  I'm just north of Atlanta.  You?

camprn, you asked 'do you know what this plant is'...are you referring to the plant posted by the original poster? If so, yes, with the help of my plant friend in Thailand I gave the best answers and I suspect the original poster was satisfied with my answers and has not returned to add photos of flowers as I hoped she would:

 - Rudraksha Tree (Elaeocarpus grandiflorus)
http://www.orchids-flowers.com/tropical-flowers/rudraksha-tree-elaeocarpus-grandiflorus/

 - It is also called Anyang Anyang or Blue Olive Berry

-Khrai yoi = Elaeocarpus grandiflorus J E Smith

camprn,  you are asking about a different plant, please supply a photo and more information, thank you.

Please forgive me as I am still learning how this forum works.
