Greenhouse use in our zone

Post  Beau on 11/29/2012, 11:34 am

Good morning.

I was given an organic growers greenhouse made by shelter logic. It assembeled very easily.I have been tring to research information on ideal temprature ect. I have gone to my local and state extention sites and all info is geared towards large commercial growers. I found one usefull site, but it was based on use in zone 4. Does anyone else in North West Florida (Pensacola Pan handle) use a greenhouse? If so, what is the ideal temprature range?

I do not have answers to your questions but I had the idea that if you have a 'Garden Club' in your area, maybe some members may know the answers.

Good luck!

I thought the ideal temperature was dependent on what plant(s) you were trying to grow. I live in zone 9a and I only use a "greenhouse" from January until last frost(mid March-ish) and that's just to grow transplants of tomatoes and peppers.

Welcome to the forum Beau.
You might want to go to YouTube and enter
IFASCDistrict
Those are the Univ of Fla tapes and they are very helpful for the Panhandle and Central Fla area gardeners.

I have been gearing up for the move to Fla in the near future and from what little I've already learned, I think that using a greenhouse only during the months that drop below freezing would be best. For your area that might be the whole month of Jan. You could start your seedlings in the greenhouse for transplanting when it warms up a little. Or in December you could move any crops you have in pots inside the greenhouse to extend production.

Beau ,
Look at pages 260 and 267 of mel's book 2006 edition if you have it ... in these pages are the germination temp and days to germinate. .. growing temps will need to be 59 to 80 of if your planning to use heat much hotter and you will kill off most temperate climate plants .. very few survive over 90 of for long.
