what do you get if you mix cement, peat moss and Mel's mix..

Post  Theresa on Fri Apr 16, 2010 7:06 am

You get this...cement moss balls

I made them by mixing ready mix sand topping cement with peat moss, and formed it around a ball of Mel's mix that was inside a nylon sock and poked holes for where the plants would be inserted.
Just something a little different

Those are really neat. How much cement to peat moss for the ball mix? I'm thinking about making these for the local craft fair coming up in a month. Also, how many holes and what size? Thanks!

It's 1/2 ready mix sand topping cement, 1/2 peat moss. Mix it with water till it's like mud.
Add Mel's mix or potting soil to a nylon stocking and form it into what ever size ball you like.
Then take the cement mixture and put it all around the stocking soil filled ball until it's covered about an inch thick with the cement mixture.
When the cement mixture starts to set up but still soft, poke the holes using a pencil or stick. The holes need to be at least big enough to poke roots of a plant in to it, about the size of your finger. My husband also drilled holes with his drill once the cement mixture set up overnight, no special drill bit was needed.
Put however many holes you like, I just put them here and there, whatever I thought looked good. Succulents do good in them. When I water them I just water the whole ball with the water hose or water can.

Good luck and let me know how you do!

If you're old school use:

1 part Portland cement
2 parts sand
2 parts peat moss

We use the mix to make flower pots, using old plastic pots for the mold. Let your creation set for at least a week; the mix doesn't gain strength as quickly as regular concrete mix.

I do flower pots too and found a very easy method for larger pots. I use vermiculite with the ready mix sand topping 1/2 each equal parts to make these.
Since they are larger I use the hanging wire baskets with the liners to make them and I get the cheap ones at the dollar store.
It takes two wire baskets, one under the liner for support (can be used again later) put the liner on the outside of the wire frame and put a layer of cement mixture on it and put the other wire basket frame on top and add more cement to cover wire frame. The wire frame will reinforce the cement mix since these are larger pots.

Poke some holes for drainage with a pencil, I pressed large veined leaves in it to give the outside a texture, then just cover it with plastic and let it set a couple of weeks, you don't want it to dry out to quickly or it will crack. Once it's set up and dry just turn it over and remove the inside wire frame and your ready to plant.

You can paint them if you like.
