Who has a greenhouse?

Post  Alternative Farmer on 12/17/2012, 7:16 pm

Hello, I've been lurking here for a while. I'm wondering if anyone here has a greenhouse. Im thinking about a build-it-yourself kit. Can you do Square Foot Gardening in a greenhouse? Does anyone know if they are sturdy? Do they survive real winter's?

Hi there, Zone 6 eh? Where do you live? How much sun do you get in the winter and what is you solar exposure? In zone six I would guess you would probably need to heat a green house during the coldest part of the winter, if you want to grow food all year.

Here in the wet Western Oregon area, we have a greenhouse to supplement the sunroom in growing plants to set out in late May. With the famous overcast-drizzle-rain springs here, plants just don't get enough sun to complete their growth-fruiting cycle before cold weather in late Autumn. We grow fabulous broccoli, kale, cabbage, lettuce here, but tomatoes and peppers struggle without help. Every tomato becomes precious, so we work to get a good harvest to can for winter. A greenhouse? Hey, you do what 'ya gotta do. Nonna

I am in Zone 7 and had a polycarbonate and metal kit greenhouse. From the first year we had "issues" with the door flying off in the wind. Within a couple of years, no matter how much caulk, etc. that we used, panels would blow off.

We really thought the door was protected from the heavy winds, but apparently not.

Even when it was functioning perfectly, it was really only good for seed starting and growing things like lettuce. I never was able to "grow tomatoes" or anything substantial in it.

I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

If you decide to build, here are some You Tube links for the Rocket Stove, green house model, that might work for you.
