I want to introduce myself

Post  cincybee on 1/14/2013, 2:03 pm

Hello my name is Terri, but my family & friends call me Bee. So please call me Bee. I am a newbie to my own SFG. My daddy has been doing this sense Mel's book came out. I have only been able to garden in planters until this coming year. We bought a house last year in Rockford, IL. (I'm Cincinnati born & raised) I married a N IL man a few years ago. I told my Hubby that I wanted to do the SFG in our yard. I told him I wanted to start kinda small. I went home to Cincy to visit my Son's & Grandkids in Oct for a week. When I got home he should me what he had built for me...LOL Two 4x4 & one 4x8 SFG beds. Shocked I started LOL & said wow hun, Thank you! He said well I just took your design & went with it I love you. So I am excited & feeling a little overwhelmed at the same time! I am looking forward to all of the great advice here!
So here's to happy gardening!!! Bee

It's great to have a supportive spouse to help out. Lucky you.

And welcome to the forum. I hope you have the ALL NEW SQUAREFOOT GARDENING BOOK or at least access to it (library) The second edition is due out mid Feb. I've already ordered mine from Amazon. Not on Kindle yet. This is the book that is the basis for the gardening on this forum and helps us all garden from the same viewpoint.

Hi Bee ,
You must have a hubby who is like me Laughing
Welcome to the site hope you have a long and sucessfull period with us all.
i
If you have not already explored the site, the home page contains a useful thread subject index so do the bobbles on the left of the home page .

As Mel's mix is the very heart of our " All New Square Foot Gardening " ( ANSFG )there are some excellent threads that should get you on the straight and narrow
" How strong is your backbone " and " Compost 101 " are great starting points.
Getting your composting going correctly right from the start is something you perhaps should consider. For it is the making of your own with your own materials that gives the best results plus it is frequently by far the cheapest way forward.

The book details are in my strap line .

glad you\'re here bee happy hi
Just remember not to take on more than you can handle all at once.
You don't have to fill all three beds at once. As llama momma said on another thread, "One shovel at a time". Good advice there.
It was nice of your husband to build you the three beds. I'm sure he will help with the mixing of Mel's Mix.
Oh, and start building a compost pile, you will find several very useful threads here. Ask questions, we like to help, just as many of us were helped when we started. Very Happy

Welcome Bee! There isn't much to add that others haven't said. It may feel overwhelming at first, but reading what has been suggested and going step by step, you will realize that you have your first bed filled with Mel's Mix, then your next and next! The more your learn, the easier it seems. If you have questions, there are lots of great people to help here! That was sure nice of your hubby to build those boxes! Have lots of fun!
