Turnips and Beets won't grow

Hi,

We have been doing SFG in San Francisco for about 2 years with mostly good results.

But for some reason, beets and turnips won't grow in the boxes. Before, when we just planted them in the ground they did much better.

We are guessing that it is the composition of Mel's Mix, maybe the wrong balance for some root crops, although our carrots and parsnips have been great and potatoes have been OK. Most everything that grows above the ground has been fine (i.e. things that normally grow in SF).

Has anyone else seen this problem?

same here. about the only thing that sort of grows are carrots, and they take a long time. We got one nice turnip last year, but the rest were tiny.

I've had to add some bone meal, which is good for root crops. Sometimes the compost is just not good enough.
For me the first yr was great for all crops, 2nd yr bad for roots, bone meal added, the current winter crop doing fine.

I have found there are good years and bad years for growing beets in particular. Well balanced compost with a bit of bone meal sprinkled in the mix will certainly help. They like water too, so if the mix is dry below that will certainly effect the bulb root. There are a few back threads about this subject and much info on the web. If you find some good info, please bring it back and share with us. What a Face

Here are some notes about red beet root. The climate notes are for my area. If you plug in your own frost dates you should get notes for your climate. Another thing to consider is the pH of the mix.
