My concern isn't only in regards to frost, I can cover the seedlings. It's also that I've been reading up on carrots & apparently, if your spring temps hit the 30s often enough, it makes the young 'uns think that it's "winter" again & thus when it warms up for good, they're more likely to bolt ("vernalization" they called it; I learned a new word!) the first year.

So I guess it will be down to Mother Nature to see what happens.

Molly ,
Perhaps look up " vernal equinox " and perhaps you'll understand why they bolt when it warms up to the better temps.

carrot GWENNIFER ROCKS!!! carrot

I got my Dragon seeds today.

THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!!!

P.S. The idea of using toilet paper tubes as containers for the seedlings rocks, too. I'm going to give it a try & see what happens.

You are very welcome mollyhespra - glad they made it. My deepest apologies to anyone if your envelope came with postage due. I took the last one I sent out with me to the post office since I had a package to mail, and the clerk informed me it required an extra twenty cents due to being an odd size (square instead of rectangle). Oh boy - I'd already mailed all the others. Sorry folks.

I still have Solar Yellow seeds to giveaway. Good for those of you without deeper beds or high rises - 6" to 7" long when mature, but nice and fat. Or harvest young.

Thanks so much, Gwennifer! They look so beautiful!

Rooster, I'm all set, thanks. Let me know if you want some collards. Others are having great success with them and I still have way too many.

We are in!!

Post  Windmere on 3/4/2013, 11:58 am

We are embarking on our first ever vegetable garden. It just so happens that we bought a packet of Kaleidoscope seeds. My daughter is going to plant some in a 2 liter soda bottles. We NEVER drink soda. However, we got a coupon for a free bottle. We did the "mentos geyser" science experiment yesterday. Next is the carrots.

We also have a packet of "Little Finger" carrots. Perfect for SFG because its maximum length is 3".

So, we are definitely in for the carrot week!!! What a cool idea. Very Happy

Pepper knows as well as the rest of us GA folks, that if we wait until April 15, it will be too hot to grow carrots where we are at. I have mine in as well, but did save a few seeds to plant April 15 just for giggles to see what happens.

But yes I do have seed left. Like Bob said if I wait thill Apr to plant they won't amount to much. My very first planting was a late one last year. They only made a small tap root, never did fill out

Bnoles and pepper - I am with you both. I planted 2 squares 2/10, 2 squares 2/24, 2 squares 3/9 and I will plant another 2 squares 3/16. I will find an empty square somewhere for carrot week to plant my multicolored carrots.

+1 yolos I will also "find one".

R&R just use a "TOP HAT"; look at bnoles's pic near the center is an open bottomed 6 inch tall frame that sits on top of one( or more) squares to make the 12 inch depth. Carrots like it cool a container MAY get too warm for good developement.

Sorry, have too drop out. Just found out that my season for carrots isn't until August. Those that have sprouted probably wont make it thru the coming weeks. Spring here has fled and the non humid warm season has arrived. Daytime temps are three digits for me. Have to wait until fall before I can have a good go at this. Have a few hot season plants in that should be okay. Just have to save whats left of thr seed for six months and then try again. It was fun while it lasted.

I do have extra wood and my dad is suppose to teach me how to use a saw. Smile I tried growing some in containers before, but couldnt get them to sprout. That was when I didnt know what I was doing and there's a good chance I started them too late in the year.

I got carrots ready to pull they have been growing all winter in a flower box will post pics tomorrow we have been using them so I am glad it's time to plant. The carrots I grew are petite sweet from american seed. we have good luck with radish and planted the carrots at the end of the summer. I had forgotten about them thinking they were duds until one day i was out looking around and noticed all of the green in the flower box. Guess what carrots were thriving! guys at work didn't know how to get carrot seeds until I told them they had to flower then they googled it to see if I was right. I won;t be waiting on seeds just enjoying them before the sun burns them off.

I'm still waiting for my carrots to sprout. Sad I planted Touchon heirlooms (everything in my garden is heirlooms).

Upside is, tomorrow is the estimated germination date.

Downside is, it's been high 70s/low 80s all week, with no change expected.

I planted my carrots a few weeks ago and they sprouted, but something was eating the little guys. Mad

I have what's left of them covered with tulle now and I've dusted diatomaceous earth all over and around them. I will still probably have to replant a bunch of them. Sad I only planted Berlicum 2 but in the spirit of Carrot week, maybe this weekend I'll do a couple of squares with Lunar White, Atomic Red, and Cosmic Purple since I have those seeds too!

I have some petite sweet seeds from last year they are the carrots we are eating now they grew during the winter. My question is when is it too hot to grow them? We are already hovering close to the 70's during the day and 30'ish~50'ish at night.
