I planted spinach seeds outside a little over 2 weeks ago, and at intervals since, and yesterday they sprouted! Granted, I have windows on my boxes, but they usually blow off during the storm de jour, so I understand your pain, Kim.

The peas I planted around the same time seem to be doing nothing so I planted some more yesterday in a box with no window. Then found out there's snow on the way tonight in my area. Rolling Eyes

And since I don't feel like up-potting my root bound seedlings of collards, broccoli, swiss chard, cabbage, and whatever else I have growing inside, I plan on planting them out this weekend under hoops which will probably blow off also. Plus there may be more snow here on Monday nite.

No here yet.

March musings

Post  SQFTBIX on 3/21/2013, 3:05 pm

I have been busier than I want to be. I have about 40 plants of various veggies in my basement growing great guns. Decided this was a year for Heirloom only tomatoes. Two of the more intruiging varieties are Black Krim and Abe Lincoln. I have others such as brandywine but I wanted to spice it up a little.
I now have two hydroponic systems which is where I grow my main salad veggies. I have a collapsable greenhouse and 6 4X4 plots. Most, if not all of them, will be filled.
I did some winter research and discovered that the lights I had in my grow stations were not correct. So, with a little assist from my wife, we found better lights and the plants are doing a lot better. I also found a newer blend on true organic fertilizer.
I have to get into my beds and turn the winter wheat over and work in some new compost so I can get the cabbage and other plants in the beds in early April. I have covers so if the weather turns, I will be ready. Can't wait for the season to begin.

Lake effect snow warning still in effect until midnight.
What the heck kind of name is Ukka anyway?

I am left gazing wistfully out the window at the falling snow.
Started some Stevia and some Sacred Tobacco just to make myself feel better.

Last frost date is sometime in the first two weeks of May.

This Saturday, March 23 is the first SFG class for the year at my house. The students will NOT be impressed. Embarassed

Good luck with the class but aren't you supposed to be getting snow?

Nope, no snow expected here - sunny and 50F. Besides you can't predict the weather when you set up the classes in the winter so it's always a crap shoot. Smile
