So yesterday was solstice, so I got out there and planted garlic!

The cloves were from last year's harvest of Red Inchelium.  Last year I planted (and harvested) 36 plants, and saved my six biggest for planting this year.  Well those plus a couple spares ended up with me planting 80 cloves, haha!

Sounds great!

Good thing you like garlic...  Wink

I was thinking of getting some of the Red Inchelium.  Why did you decide on that one?

I think I picked it because the description sounded good, it was a softneck so it could be braided (haha, I never braided any), it kept well, needed very little chilling, and was intermediate so it sounded like the most flexible.

Brainchasm - I have so enjoyed my little tour of your garden progress. I just started my first SFG this year and so far things are going well, but it was so interesting to see what worked for you and what didn't. We are in different zones but if you can do that in Vegas, I know I can figure out what to do here in SoCal! I was interested that your peas did so well since I planted peas late (I thought) because I read that they don't like the heat. I love that your pictures show how well SFG works - hopeful! You have a lot of tomatoes for your space. I can tell from you video that you do train them up - do you single stem them? And you don't have trouble with your climbing veggies shading out the others? Lots of ?? -huh?Razz

I typically start my peas in late winter/early spring, since they don't mind the cool so much.  What they DO mind is not getting enough sunlight though!  One of my beds gets very little sun until much further in the year, and I've learned that lesson this year. Smile

I do start a lot of tomatoes, and yes I train them up.  I try to single stem them, but pruning gets so tedious sometimes.

I've never had a shading issue with the veggies, though I might see it this year.  My big "problem" so far is that my garlic seems rather pale.  cyclops

The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!  What a Face   One fine summer evening, BC and his GF were sitting in the garden swing, whispering and giggling, playing tootsies, as only the young can do.  Suddenly, the neighbors heard terrible screaming and called 911.  When the police stormed the back yard, all they found were 2 pairs of flip flops, splattered in tomato juice.

Ok, "The Attack of the Killer Peas . . . . 2 pairs of flip flops, splattered in squished green peas."

Brainchasm,  I finally planted French Breakfast radishes and they are starting to for tiny root radishes.  They are the only radish I can enjoy eating, most I have tried are woody or too hot for enjoyment. Thanks. If you can do it in Las Vegas, I can do it here!

Good luck!  A little late in the season for radishes, but hey, at least they'll grow fast!

The French Breakfast radishes are doing great tucked in the cool shade of 2 sprawling Roma and San Marzano. I've eaten 3 in the garden. This is the first time that I have grown edible radishes. Thanks to you, Brainchasm
