Composing Mesquite Pods with Horse Manure

Post  Gunny on 3/6/2013, 10:39 am

Last week I noticed some volunteer sprouts in my compost bins and yesterday I took a closer look and yep baby mesquite trees. Now will have to dig them out and plant them on the west side of my backyard where they will provide some needed shade during the hot season. Besides the seed pods are edible right off the tree and when almost mature can be picked and dried then ground into flour. Pods can also be used to make tea and a coffee substitute plus jelly. I guess using old pods in my compost wasn't such a bad idea after all Laughing

That's awesome, I had never heard of a mesquite tree so I googled it! Did you transplant them yet?
