Another from South Carolina

Post  cj32769 on 3/15/2013, 4:11 pm

Hello from North Augusta, South Carolina. I am just across the river from Augusta Ga. and half way between the mountains and the beaches not too bad about 3 hours either way and 3 hours from Atlanta. I have been gardening off and on for a while and starting from seeds for a couple of years. I have my wife hooked finally and this year we are going to try our luck with square foot beds. Thanks for posting all of the great information here i have been planing all winter (ha, ha, we ain't got no winter y'all). Anyway my name is Chip and I am really enjoying soaking in all the info here; it's a nice place. If I don't post much it's because I am reading so don't type too fast because I read slow. jocolor

Chip do NOT make the same mistake I did!!! I bought someone's "compost"....it IS NOT YHE SAME AS MELS MIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
affraid affraid affraid affraid affraid affraid Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad
It was full of pine bark and no telling what all. Just the other day the owner of a local nursery tried to sell me their "compost" had the same problem....pine bark. The bark takes up most of the nitrogen cause it is still breaking down. Just look at my first year garden and most ALL POSTS I have posted .....I constantly complain of low fruit size from this "store bought crap".

Thanks for the advice pepper I have my vermiculite ordered and I will look at that compost very carefully to see what is in it. The place is down on the river and they have a variety of things. It's a cricket farm and a compost supplier. This is the description of what I am going to look at: Compostost® The Original Healthful Soil Amender
Cow Manure, Wood Fiber, Leaf Mold, and Grass Clippings
MARCH SPECIAL: Thru 3/31. You-Haul-It ONLY! I will share what I find out about it.

I got a load in my 93 (little) Toyota only 1 yard for 29 bucks but it looks really good. Not much bark at all mostly leaves, grass and dung if you look What a Face really close, kind of looks like thick black dirt really. I checked it out and the sod farm is on one side of the river and International Paper is downstream so I guess they have a good source of raw materials. Enough for the welcome mat I think i will start a story in the correct place. Great forum though!
