What's happening in the lower south?

Happy St Patricks Day. Today the garden was wearing a bit of green.

I made a new bed at Wilmington garden today. A strawberry bed. Will be a surprise for my DIL when she returns from the Philippines in early May. She has been wanting strawberries.

Squirrels ate the tops of my kale and bok choy seedlings. I didn't have the tulle up yet. I have more seeds sprouting in the house and I can start direct sowing for successive harvests.

Tomato seedlings are popping. Should need only a few more days on the heat mat to get them all up. Then I can move into cups of MM. Also have a hot few peppers popping. The yellow cayenne and red scorpians are up but that is all right now. Peppers take extra time to germinate and some are from seed that I bought last year that never got any germination. I planted but don't expect anything. Sweet peppers were planted a week later and are not showing yet.

Sowed some mustard greens, radishes, and mesculin mix last weekend and I saw a bit of green today. Some bibb lettuce that I transplanted at the second leaf stage is hanging on. Spinach is just getting some third leaves. Sugar snap peas are starting to show some green.

Sounds like you are well on your way Kay. I'm in zone 7 here and really itching to get started so I enjoyed your post knowing that soon
it will be my turn to drop a few seeds.

Good Luck with everything, and I heard that mothballs keep squirrels out, I don't know for sure, I have a hawk that keeps squirrels at bay here.

I delayed direct sowing my seeds this week. Had a frost last night and it is cold out today. High hopes for the weekend.

Been Gone to Long

I used to be active here in 2010 but when we moved we tried row planting because I did not have raised bed materials. What a boatload more work!
These are the ones I have started indoors, under grow lights in mushroom compost:
spinach
celery
caesar lettuce
peas- sugar snap
turnips
peas- these say english peas and says sugar snap, different variety than the first one I listed.
kale
broccoli
radishes daikon
early cabbage


These are also ok to plant indoors, right?
wando peas
roma tomatoes
early onder beets
cauliflower
mary washington asparagus
parsley
dill
artichokes
wheatgrass
cayenne peppers
cilantro
flat onion
matushima chinese cabbage
korean peppers
joes long peppers
culinary flax
sugar beets

I am trying to make sure I only start things indoors that transplant well. It is still pretty cold in northwest ga. It is 28 tonight.
any help or ideas are greatly appreciated!

Sunshine, I'm in northwest Ga. too, around Dallas, I plant about 2 acres, and sell a little produce, helps to pay for the crop. Shoot I haven't even broke ground yet this spring its so wet. Its still a little early my average last frost date is mid April. As soon as it dries a little
I'm planting field corn. Meanwhile I am thinking of harvesting a few seeds from the flowering fall garden. Mustard, and collards are all blooming well and putting on seed.

You sure have a variety of plants, I try to keep my crops to just a few
easy to sell money type crops. I'm trying new ideas this year and looking forward to seeing how it all pans out. I enjoy every year of gardening its always a challenge and never the same..

Northwest GA

GAREDCLAY- I am about an hour and a half north of you. We are doing such a variety because we can, dehydrate, freeze and barter our yield.... I was reading the lazy gardener's schedule and it shows a 3/24 last frost but I was sure I saw a 4/10 last frost online somewhere last month. I agree the ground is super wet but I hoping to get these indoor starts really going. Turns out I bought mushroom compost that is full of ants. Might be back to the drawing board.
Thinking of doing sft gardening for everything except corn and tomatoes. Saw the tomato hedge in the sft garden book and it looks interesting. I need to keep out chickens. The corn quantity is too much for beds. I want to plant 50 rows this year.

good luck! If you know of anywhere to get mary washington asparagus 3 yr crowns please let me know. we moved last year and I forgot to take mine with me!
