Will grubs come back??

Post  jpuzerewski on 3/18/2013, 10:46 am

I have removed all of the soil in 1 of my garden boxes and put the soil on a tarp to expose it to the elements and birds. I picked out too many grubs to count. At this time I do not see any grubs in the soil (not sure about eggs). What do I need to do now? Do I leave the soil on the tarp for a few days? Will the grubs come back? I have two more boxes with grubs, they are 4x8. Thanks!

Good question - I found a ton of grubs in my beds too and pulled about 30 of them out of a pot yesterday when I went to empty it to replant it. I'm ordering beneficial nematodes now, which should control them. Yuck!

Lawn grubs are the larval stage of beetles (most likely) so yes they will come back after more eggs are laid. Now, if you know precisely what beetle it is you have you may have some other treatment options. Contact your local county extension service regarding identifying the wee beastie and they may also have some management suggestions for you. The fact of life on this planet is that insects way outnumber humans and there is no way you will ever completely control them.
