Old Salt starting out with SFG

Post  SaltyCowdawg on 4/9/2013, 10:54 am

Hi folks,

My wife and I have begun to do some SFG since about three years ago. It has started with a combination of tubs and window boxes but this year I have vowed to expanding the operation.

My goal this year is to establish table top gardens (multiple.) This approach appeals to us because we have five very inquisitive dogs and they will try to eat anything remotely edible. Don't have to worry too much about varmits since Luna, our English Shepherd, does a real good job running them off.

The window boxes I have in place now are mostly designated for culinary herbs. I love to cook with fresh herbs especially rosemary which I use every excuse to use.

I am also a home brewer and have been considering (next year) establishing a hop tee-pee somewhere in the yard. My wife is concerned that hops may be toxic to the dogs so I will probably put a fence around them to keep the dogs from eating them.

Anyhow.. that's my introduction.

One old salt to another, welcome aboard, this is my first year and its amazing how much new stuff there is to wade through. I guess all the learning experiences are what keeps our heads straight and keeps us home and out of the retirement centers Very Happy
Have fun and enjoy all the little surprises that crop up.

welcome to the forums, SaltyCowdawg
And I didn't realize you were still so new roll sign slow here, so if I didn't say it already, glad you\'re here to you, too, Gunny!

If you have the book, All-New Square Foot Gardening*, then you have all you "really" need to know. Being on here is all about community and details not specified in the book. And, as you see, there is a great community, always ready to welcome more; and lots of details that we didn't know, we didn't know, until we got into "playing in the dirt" Smile as one of my friends always puts it.

*And, there is a newer, just published, second edition of ANSFG, if you haven't already gotten a copy. study

SFG/Organic Gardening/etc

Post  SaltyCowdawg on 4/9/2013, 4:14 pm

This is actually not my first rodeo as far as being a square foot gardener goes. Long before my wife and I lived in a house with a yard we were growing stuff in tubs and window boxes and getting yelled at by land lords who were afraid the window boxes would fall off the second story balcony. Very Happy
