Greetings from SW France

Post  QuercyGarden on 4/16/2013, 5:32 am

I am a part time resident of the Departement of the Lot in SW France, living the other half of the year in Colorado. I have tried for several years to raise a vegetable garden, but the soil here is miserable. It is thick clay, filled with small pebbles. Square foot gardening seems the ideal solution, assuming I am able to find all the ingredients for Mel's "Magic" Mix in economical quantities.

My question for now is does anyone know the formula for converting liters into cubic feet?

Merci beaucoup.

Many thanks. So if I am going to have two 8' x 4' beds, I will need 32 cubic feet of mix which is 906.1 liters - 302 liters each of compost, peat moss and vermiculite. Correct?

That's what my math comes up with as well.

I have the US version of the book. I found Square Metre Gardening on Amazon France for 14 euros. Are the measurements in that book the same as in Square Foot Gardening, only converted to metric measurements? For example, does Mel still use a 4' x 4' basic unit which would convert to about 3.7 meters x 3.7 meters? If so, would you be able to check in the book to see if my calculations for two plots of 3.7 meters x 7.4 meters are correct? I estimated that I would need about 900 liters of Mel's Mix. Many thanks.

Is the ISBN code for your USA book the same as I have given , if not what is it??

That's fine ..... it's good to run with so long as you dont let the differences in measurements flummox you .. happy gardening.
