Compost Party

Post  B00kemdano on 4/18/2013, 12:20 pm

So, I was adding a smidge of water to my kitchen and garden scrap compost bin today, and found that my wife had put the leftover cupcakes from my daughter's third birthday party in the bin.

What % of icing makes a good compost? No

All of it ...

I suspect that the sugars will feed the yeasts , the flour will make for nitrogen and the fats will make acids , the papers if any will also make nitrogen and fibre

it's all good, including the wrappers. If the wrappers were the foil type, you will eventually find them again.

I LOVE the idea of a compost party! Can you imagine? Everyone in the organic community getting together and dragging a leaf bag of their HM compost to someones yard, then dumping it onto a huge tarp and mixing it up, then refilling their bag and dumping & mixing it into their compost at home.

How fun would that be!?! rock on

We just need to be selective in our invitations: Knowledgeable composters only! Besides, CC already said Everyone in the organic community (color highlight mine); I'd think a community would have similar knowledge & singlemindedness

I think it probably depends on what the icing is made of. I've been collecting pickle and icing buckets from the deli/bakery section of my grocery store, and a few of the icing buckets had some leftover in it. I didn't wash them out right away, but I left them outside. NO bugs would touch it. Even after I washed them out, some of the icing was left on the driveway, and days later, still, NOTHING would go near it. Sooooo...

If your wife actually made the cupcakes and icing herself, it's probably OK, because she would have likely used real sugar and stuff. If it came from a bakery, it would likely depend on what kind of bakery and the quality of the ingredients they use.

It's all good, it's amazing the things that can disappear in a compost pile. Don't fret, there are too many other things that need tending. Wink

My MiL made them (and they were goooood!) and the icing, so it's just sugar, butter, vanilla, and some food coloring. I'm trying to watch my girlish figure, so, unfortunately, there were leftovers. Sad

I didn't realize how anxious I've been about my compost bin until you said that, Camprn! I guess it's true that nature will reclaim everything eventually. And if there's an extra wrapper in there when I go to use the compost, I can just screen it out then. Smile
