Making Me's Mix with a bad back

Post  sanderson on 4/23/2013, 3:59 am

This is my first year so I won't claim to be the expert. However, with a bad back, I had to figure out an easy way to make Mel's Mix without having my husband do all of my work. Standing at the redwood picnic table is comfortable for me so I decided to mix it at a comfortable height. A few photos attached. I covered table with 4 mm plastic, bought a skreet pan (concrete mixing pan), used my old horse bucket as a light weight container and a wide hand trowel. I spread out a large 4 mm plastic sheet on the soft grass where I could tip out the composts in one corner and the compressed peat moss in another. I could comfortably fluff the peat moss on my knees. The perlite and vermiculite remained in their bags.

[Opps, I just realized my photos did not show up]

Then using a nursery one gallon pot, I scooped up 3 gallons of peat moss into the horse bucked and added to pan. Then 3 scoops of perlite/vermiculite into the bucked and added to the pan. Finally, 3 scoops of compost into the bucket then into the pan. Mix with the trowel. [Wearing a mask] Slide pan to the edge and dump into a 33 gallon wheeled garbage can. Repeat until garbage can full. I can wheel the garbage can around the yard. I filled all of my seed pots and flower pots with MM standing at the table. I would scoop out 3 bucket of MM and add water, using the trowel to mix. Also seeded or transplanted to pots at the table. Needed my husband to fill the SFG beds while I sprayed with the hose.

I've had to do similar on numerous occasions ...
One particularly bad period I was using a kiddies sand bucket and extra long handled kiddies sand spade ( home modified by me for me ) to do two small buckets of peat , vermiculite , blended composts and blend it together in a paint roller tray sat in the glasshouse at belt height. I filled my pots at the same height and only watered things whilst sitting in my wheel chair using the hose and spray lance when the pots were where I wanted them .
I usually get Alison or the delivery people to place all the bagged stuff in my big double wheeled muck barrow , on my small car trailer or on some of the home made 4 foot x 3 foot steel framed skate boards . Thankfully I have four feet wide smooth concrete paths all around our property so moving the wheeled devices is as easy as leaning against the machine and it moves with ease.

I received your reply while I was out of town. You must be a very dedicated gardener to continue while you have bad episodes. Just curious. What country?
