prevention of stains on hard surfaces

Post  Nick Bell on 4/23/2013, 6:22 am

Classic 4' x 4' x 6" (1.2 x 1.2 x 150 ml)
Square foot garden laid on weed mat is great.
Suggestions please for underlay to prevent staining marble and tile surfaces. Even with a marine ply bottom staining from drainage holes is a concern. Help please.

Hi Nick,
If it is that much of a prob perhaps :-

Make a big tray 2 inches deep maybe use long life pond liner tacked to a light wooden frame a couple of inches bigger bigger than the bed foot print to hold any residue that escapes it will also allow evaporation .
I don't know how you'll handle it if you get a down pour of rain and it fills the tray .. or would you not mind as it could readily be hosed away withing a few minutes of the rain stopping ?

Hi Nick,

I have the exactly the same concerns as you too. I'm starting out on my SFG journey too (SFG complete rookie here).

One of the comments that I received from one of the other threads is to use a bottom and then raise it just enough to have a waterproof container/tray underneath the drainage holds. For even more absorbancy, line the tray with a towel. The other benefit is that you can wring said towel over the plants to re-claim some of the dissolved nutrients.

Disclaimer: I have not yet tried this solution out yet but it is currently the most likely the one that I'm going to be using when I construct my planters. I also plan to double down on the weedblocker cloth I'll be using as a crude filter for the drainage holes.

Hope that helps!
