Drip Irrigation

Post  ChristyMC on 4/20/2010, 11:56 pm

I know that the recommended watering method for my SFG is the old bucket and cup, and that is usually my favorite part of the day to go out and spend time in my garden. However, I will be traveling quite a bit this summer and I don't want to come back to find all my hard work has ended in dead crops. I have seen that some people have mentioned that they have set up drip irrigation for their SFG's and I wanted to see if I could get any advice. I have spent hours researching on the drip irrigation web page and now I am just totally confused by all the different little parts and doohickys to even know where to begin. I do not have any underground irrigation system to hook into, so I will be hooking up to the hose bib. I have three 4 X 4 gardens that are all in a row spaced about 3 feet apart each. Any help here would be appreciated, but anything like pictures on how things should be laid out would be great!

Irrigation setup

Post  n1111z on 4/21/2010, 2:29 pm

Christy,
Watering can is not an option here in the dry high plains, my plants would be dead in a month. I use water irrigation, get the parts at www.dripdepot.com. Just connect the pvc to your hydrant. Use a timer if you like. Use the little blue spray heads, they are "jet sprayer on 10/32 in. thread" from drip depot. Here's what it looks like"

It looks complicated but it's not, once you round everything up, it all connects by hand. Good luck.

I used plain 'ol 1/2" soaker hose for my drip irrigation system. I do have lawn sprinklers which gets most of my SFG twice a week. The soaker hose set up is to supplement the lawn sprinklers. You can see the video I made about it here:

Thanks for this Tim. I am definitely incorporating soaker hoses when we built the boxes this weekend.

Well, I got the irrigation installed, after viewing everyone's pictures (which were very helpful) and getting plenty of advice I decided to go with a method similar to what Choksaw did. It works great, now they test will be to see if my garden is still alive when I get back from vacation. I would post some pictures of how the system came out but I don't know how to post pictures on here.
