Greetings from Los Angeles! (Photos)

Post  Coelli on 4/26/2013, 9:36 pm

Just wanted to share a few recent pictures:

The Guardian of the Strawberries

First pea

First radish

And Blue Berry Blend Tomatoes

I have some definite failures out there, but mostly successes right now Smile

These are gorgeous photos. Are you a professional photographer? The strawberry shot is very whimsical. Your tomatoes are making me jealous!

I'm not - these were all done with my iPhone 5! Very Happy Thank you!

I buy little figurines at the thrift store and give them homes in the garden. The little dragon is one of my favorites.

Edited to add: Those are the "bluest" of the Blue Berry Blends so far, but I'm amazed at how productive the plants are. I wasn't expecting much because they seem to be a pretty rare and new strain, but the two BBB plants are outproducing the other 14 by a long shot. Between the two plants they've already set maybe 20 tomatoes. It's a little nuts! Good thing I have a friend with a cafe who will buy any extra produce we can't use!

OH! I love the little dragon!

Everything looks great! I wish I would get some tomatoes. There are buds and flowers, so hopefully soon! Very Happy

What is the mulch you're using on the radishes and strawberries?

For the radishes it's rice hulls, which are fantastic because they don't absorb water and really keep the moisture in. Unfortunately, I mulched almost my entire garden and all of my containers with it before discovering that it attracts birds who love to root and scratch in it. As a result everything in the garden has to be covered with bird netting or tulle.

The strawberries are mulched with some wood-fiber-based small animal bedding (Kaytee Soft-sorb) that I sometimes use in my guinea pig's cage. Very Happy It takes forever to break down in the compost tumbler though so I switched to a different type and used the leftovers to mulch the strawberries!
