HELP! What is eating all my plants?!

Post  medwards119 on 4/30/2013, 9:38 pm

My plants are being eaten by who-knows-what! My strawberries have tiny little black bugs (smaller than tiny ants), my eggplant has the same black bugs and also little tan ones (aphids, I think), my cucumbers, basil, and pumpkins have holes in the leaves, and my tomatoes are looking GREAT, except they are getting ending up with huge holes in them because something is eating them! I also have mosquitos (it has rained a LOT lately, and I am going to be investing in marigolds and citronella for this problem). I live in Houston, TX and I would prefer not to use chemicals, if possible... but I will if I have to.

Sorry I have no pictures or anything... I'm new to this forum, and to growing my own food! Smile

My first guess is flea beetles! They ate some of my cherry tomatoes like that last year!

Hi,and welcome fellow Houstonian. Not sure about the black bugs, but the huge holes in the tomato fruit may be tomato fruit worm.Just found two of them in the garden yesterday one worm took out three yellow pear tomatoes in a row went in one side of the first tomato and out the third tomato leaving it's goo on the inside and outside of the tomato .It likes to eat the fruit while it's still green. The other was heading towards my eggplant after Saturdays heavy rain you have to pick them off and get rid of them. Small thin worms have been eating the radish leafs if you go out early in the morning I go about 6:45 you'll be able to catch and get rid of those.Birds are also a pain here. They like to eat the seedling as they sprout .Eating the leaves and leave the steams sometimes they take the whole plant leaving you wondering where the plant went.Turns out they also dig the dirt leaving mounds and take the seeds.you will need netting for those till your plants grow a little more.
