What's eating my carrot seedlings??

Post  lzalvis on 5/3/2013, 9:11 am

In the fall, I planted my first carrot seedlings. When they all started popping up (still had only the 2 thin leaves), something started eating them. I finally caught several black & yellow things that people told me were cutworms. I laid out some diotomaceous earth, and that was the end of them!

So a few weeks ago, I planted carrot seeds again, and immediately put out the diotomaceous earth. I've put out the DE several times now. And yet, something is still eating my carrot seedlings! It ate one overnight. At this point, I'm going to have to plant more this week just to have a crop this summer.

I"m so frustrated, why isn't the DE working?? Mad Mad Any other tips on what's eating them or what I can do? It's a raised bed with only carrots, and I would cover it with something, but if they're already in the soil that might be pointless.

Try going out at night time with a flashlight and see if you can see what is eating them. I did that last year and found I had literally thousands of earwigs.

If you have earwigs, you may wish to try Sluggo Plus, which is for organic gardening. It also kills cutworms, slugs, snails, and pillbugs.

Thank you! I did find that out at the end of last season but I haven't bought any yet! I have not seen many this year but they may be lurking until I plant something they like. I haven't gone out at night yet so I will have to do that soon.
