blood meal and rabbits?

Post  peachiee77 on 5/5/2013, 3:01 pm

I am trying to find a deterrent for rabbits without having to cage everything in (because that's either money or work and I don't want to do either! haha) and the associate at Home Depot suggested blood meal. I was a bit skeptical and he said "you don't believe me? Let's look it up!" and we did and it seems as though people have had great success with it. we don't have a whole bunch of rabbits, but there are a couple that come around. I'm going to try it and see how it works - going to put some in the beds before I plant everything so that they get the smell and just know to stay away.

Has anyone here used this and had good luck with it? Anyone use it and have bad luck with it? haha

Be careful to put not too much in, it will provide your plants with lots of nitrogen, but too much is a bad thing. May be around the beds instead, for a rabbit deterrent. What was the recommended application rate?

Thats what I was wondering. The box says for vegetables to put 4tbsp per 10 square feet. I have 2 8x4 beds so that would be basically 12 tbsp per bed. The package says to mix into the top 8-10cm of soil. Would it be better to just sprinkle it around the perimeter of the beds do you think?

I wonder .... if it is the smell of the blood meal decaying that puts the rabbits off ?
If so be prepared for an invasion of crows / vultures etc looking for the carrion that the smell mimics .

Oh niiiiiiice... Mad

I think I'd try human urine outside the boxes before I'd put up with vultures in the yard. The crows are bad enuff around here...they are so sassy.
