Anybody with experience growing tumeric?

Post  boffer on 5/13/2013, 8:58 pm

I planted a piece of root, and after two months it has finally sent up a shoot and is getting its second leaf. Now what can I expect?

Boffer,

Welcome back! I've missed you.

Unfortunately, I know nothing about tumeric, except that it's on my spice shelf and contains many antioxidants.

Thank you, Donna. Aren't you past due for a name change? Something more appropriate like...donnainzone5? tongue

I was in an organic food store, and an employee I knew handed me a sad looking piece of root and said, 'Here, see if you can grow this.' I said 'OK, what is it?' I had never seen a tumeric root before; I would have guessed it was ginger.

It likes hot wet weather, and needs 8-10 months to mature. Not a good choice for the PNW!

Thank you, SG. I've been on a 'good for you' diet, so hopefully I can figure out how to use it.

We bought a Vitamix blender and make lots of smoothies. There is a girl on facebook that uses different types of foods/herbs/etc to make "good for you" smoothies. I can send you the link if you're interested. The more I learn about how good fresh foods are so much better for you, the more fascinated I become! Good to see you back!

If you are on a good for you diet at least you have a head start with the vegetable garden. Smile Turmeric is tropical so I would not hold my breath but who knows. Anything can happen. I put turmeric and ginger in my smoothie and love it. I tried to grow ginger once but it did not take. So how is that for no help at all?
