Please help with my first garden plan...How does this look?

Post  kmarie on 5/14/2013, 8:51 am

I am ready to start planting my first SFG and wanted to get opinions on the layout, etc... of what I had in mind. Please let me know if anything should be moved and if something doesn't work. I appreciate any feedback!!

I have 4 types of tomatoes (2 slicing, 1 cherry, 1 roma)
5 types of peppers (1 Banana, 1 Jalapeno, 1 Yellow, and 2 Red/Green)
Bush Beans
Summer Squash
Broccoli...Is it too late to plant this?
Carrots...Is it too late to plant this?
Onions...Is it too late to plant this?
Leaf Lettuce (It shows that I can do 9 per square but the book only says to do 4)...Is it too late to plant this?
Cucumbers

I apologize for the small photo. I am not sure how to make it bigger.

You are probably going to want four square feet for each tomato - unless you are very diligent about trimming and training them up a trellis. I am not familiar with your climate, but I doubt it is too late to plant carrots and onions; they will just mature later in the year.

Good luck!

I can't make out your plan. Try going into the planning software you're using and making the size of your garden smaller so that it's only a few feet larger than the box you want feedback on. Save it with a new name, then re-post the picture. That should work. Are your taller plants on the North side of the box? I think I see tomatoes on the ends with peppers in between. The toms might shade out the peppers, but try posting a larger pic & we'll all be able to chime in better.

kmarie,

Welcome to SFG and to this forum!

You really can grow indeterminate tomatoes one per square foot. It's not much work at all to learn to prune and trellis them, other than installing the trellis itself. You could use our search feature to find "pruning tomatoes," where you'll find a host of information and videos about how to do it. Determinate tomatoes, on the other hand, do require about 4 square feet each. You might want to plant these in containers.

If I were you, I'd plant my cukes along the trellis and perhaps even try to grow the squash vertically. Otherwise, you'll need to plant the squash in an outside front corner in order to let it spill over. They can actually take up 9 square feet!

Keep the questions flowing! We're here to help.

Okay, the image should be a little bit bigger. I hope this helps.
