Hello from St Petersburg FL

Hello, my name is Aleja Redden. I recently started this course with my boyfriend. He and I recently bought the book and he found out that there is a certification course. We are taking the course mainly to self sustain in some aspects. We know we cannot grow everything we eat, but it is so satisfying to grow something and eat it from your very own garden. I am a mother of two, and he is a father of two. The younger kids (5,7) love watching the plants grow. We haven't quite gotten them to eat anything as they are picky, but I am assuming that this may be a good way to get them to appreciate vegetables more since they are coming from their own garden. Right now we have three SFG boxes, all 8' x 3'. Two are 6" tall and we have a 1' box for deeper items. We have a variety of tomatoes, basil, onions, lettuce varieties, zucchini, peppers, cucumbers, beans, cilantro, parsley, rosemary, sunflowers, cantaloupe, eggplant and more growing. Most of looks okay, but since I am only a beginner, I am learning as I go. Good luck to everyone.

A warm welcome

Hi alejaredden,

Welcome to this forum! I have learned a great deal here. This is the best place to ask questions about your gardening project. There are many helpful and experienced gardeners that can provide you a wealth of information.

You are much more ahead of me as far as the stage of your garden. We did not have the idea to grow a garden until early March. You might find that the more you get your kids involved in your gardening, the more willing they might be to eat the produce. My daughter thinks it's very cool to eat veggies that she grew by herself.

Also, I have lots of family in St. Petersburg. We go there every summer to visit. One thing my wife loves about St. Petersburg is that the thrift stores have high quality clothing for cheap! Razz
